155th Infantry, State Color. Composed of men from Allegheny, Westmoreland, Clarion, and Armstrong counties, the 155th was organized in the fall of 1862. Colonel Edward J. Allen appointed Sergeant Thomas Wiseman color-bearer when the regiment received the state color on October 17th. At the battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, Sergeant Wiseman was mortally wounded and the flag was retired from service and sent to Pittsburgh for repairs. Once repaired, the flag was returned to the regiment by Samuel W. Hill. Corporal Matthew Bennett carried the color through the Battle of Gettysburg, and Sergeant Thomas I. Marlin carried the color after Gettysburg until the end of the war. The 155th was mustered out of service on June 2, 1865.
